Crucifying Themselves

In the Philippines, a few devout Christians volunteer to be nailed to crosses in order to share in the sufferings of Christ. Real nails are used, but through the palms, not the wrists. Ropes support their weight. I have heard that during the time of Christ nails would have been driven through the wrists during crucifixion (quite a common practice back then), which would have been more agonizing. The local Church does not condone this behaviour, but it continues to be an annual event and draws thousands of worshippers and curious tourists. Read the BBC News article.
